Tongariro crossing

Last weekend we were at Tongariro Crossing. It is a 20 km long tramp and it took 6 hours. The first half we walked up, on an old vulcano. On the way there were big stone formations, and it looked a bit spooky. It was quite strenous, and very warm. The weather was beautiful.
After a while, dad catched up with us ( He didn't walk with us from the beginning, because he drove to another place and started to run from there.) and we walked a little bit together. Then he kept on running. Then we came to the Emerald lakes. They were beautiful!

At the lakes we made lunch break. The colours are comming from a mineral; sulfur. It smelled like rutten eggs, but after a while we got used to it.                                                                          There were still som snow left, and we put snowballs under our hats to cool ourselves. After a littel time we came to Blue Lake, which is holy for the maori. You are not allowed to eat there.
The Earth was still very hot,  even though the vulcano broke out 35 years ago. I made a little hole, and it was so hot you could have cooked an egg there. The birds who live in this area are not brooding their eggs, they just leave them on the ground. There were many different coloured stones. They were red, purple, orange and yellow. On one place there was a vulcanic column. On the way down, there was a yellow grass witch was pretty.
On the way home we saw many Indian Peafowls! They are quite rare, and they were beautiful. Yours Tomke ♥
